I have recently accepted a permanent lectureship in theology in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Newcastle, where I will continue my various research endeavours as well as teaching the following courses (TBC):

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, The University of Manchester, England, September 2008 - September 2010

Over the course of this two year post-doctoral fellowship I completed a series of articles in the area of religion and political culture, lead quarterly doctoral seminars in religion and politics, designed and maintained the Centre for Religion and Political Culture’s website http://religionandpoliticalculture.com, and taught a number of courses for the Religions and Theology Subject Area:

  • RELT31111/61111 The Return of Religion in the West, which explores contemporary social theory and continental philosophy of religion for third year undergraduates and is open to Master of Arts students as well. I wrote this course for Autumn 2009, providing lectures and seminar tutorials.
  • RELT10311 Introduction to the Study of Religion and Theology, which is a methods and theory core course for one hundred first year undergraduates. For Autumn 2009 I gave seven of the eleven lectures for the course (Dr. Alan Williams gave the other four) as well as tutoring one of ten seminar groups twice weekly.
  • RELT60141 Religion and Political Life, which is the core course for the Religion and Political Life Master of Arts degree program and covers key western figures such as Hobbes, Tocqueville, Weber, and Habermas in a weekly seminar (Autumn 2009).
  • RELT10131 Introduction to Christian Theology, which introduces the texts and creeds of the Christian tradition to first year undergraduates. For Autumn 2008, I lectured and led the discussion seminars.
  • RELT20031 Making Sense of Christ: From Lessing to Harnack, which introduced second year undergraduates to the nineteenth century Christology of figures such as Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard and Strauss. For Autumn 2008, I lectured and led discussion seminars.

 

Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant, The University of Manchester, England, January 2005 - June 2008

Alongside my doctoral research at the University of Manchester I functioned as a seminar tutor on a number of undergraduate courses: RELT10180 Introduction to the Study of Religions, Theology and Social Anthropology; RELT10322 Introduction to the Study of Religions and Theology; and, RELT10132 Introduction to Christian Theology. I also supported the research endeavors of the Centre for Religion and Political Culture in the following ways: 1) edited and compiled the conference proceedings for the centre's 2005 Network Colloquium, Denial of Religious Authority in Democratic Culture; 2) compiled supplementary reading bibliographies for the centre’s book Religion and Political Thought: Key Readings – Past and Present published with Continuum Press; 3) researched grant proposals; 4) maintained and facilitated the revision of the Centre’s website.

 

Teaching and Research Assistant, Fuller Theological Seminary, USA, September 2002 - March 2003

For Professor William Dyrness's Systematic Theology I (Doctrine of God and Human Persons) and III (Ecclesiology and Eschatology) courses I guest lectured on three occasions and graded student coursework. As well, I assisted Professor Dyrness with the compilation of just under fifty different works of art for publication in his book Reformed Theology and Visual Culture: The Protestant Imagination from Calvin to Edwards published by Cambridge University Press.
