Suggested Writing Style Manuals

When writing academic essays, dissertations and theses, it is important to use a standard of grammar and referencing that is consistent and recognizable by your peers and teachers. For my courses I recommend the widely available and often used Chicago Manual of Style. A shortened version of the Chicago style has been edited specifically for academic writers by Kate Turabian and is also available at the bookdepository.com. Both of these manuals are available in the university library, and are likely to be in the university bookshop as well. If you are just looking for a referencing guide, Chicago Manual of Style has posted an online guide available here: Chicago Quick Guide for academic referencing and citations.

List of Relevant Journals

The following list contains a number of academic journals relevant to the study of religions and theology. Free access to some of these journals may require that you are either within a university network or have a Shibboleth or Athens login.

Journal Searching

At times it is advantageous to keyword search inside a range of academic journal articles at once. In order to do so you’ll need to use a keyword searchable database. Here’s a list of the most relevant online journal searching tools for religions and theology:

Another good resource to keep in mind is Google’s scholar search. Athttp://www.scholar.google.com/you can search a broad number of online journal and academic databases at once. Google’s online catalogue of books is quite extensive as well. Athttp://www.books.google.com/you can keyword search inside many valuable religions and theology texts for relevant information to your research interest. Some books are available for online viewing, others for previewing online -e.g. viewing the table of contents and limited amounts of material within the book.
