Teaching 2008

For the Autumn 2008-09 semester I taught the following courses in the Religions and Theology Subject Area at the University of Manchester:

  • Introduction to the Study of Religions and Theology Core Course (RELT10311). I was a seminar tutor for this eleven week first semester course which covered a number of methodological approaches to the study of religions and theology. This course was designed to be an introduction to all first year religions and theology degree students at the University of Manchester. It therefore fostered the transition into higher education by developing study and other transferable skills as a basis for later learning.
  • Introduction to Christian Theology (RELT10131), investigated the nature of the bible and development of doctrine in Christian traditions. After completing this course students should have gained: a) an understanding of the role of the Bible in Christian theology; b) an understanding of the principles which underlie and give rise to the formation of Christian doctrine; c) acquired an awareness of the theological controversies that led to the formation of the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation and which resulted in the creation of creeds; and d) be able to evaluate critically all of the above.
  • Making Sense of Christ: From Lessing to Harnack (RELT20031), focused upon the nature of Christology in the thought of key nineteenth century philosophers such as Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Strauss, etc. On completion of the course students should have gained: a) an understanding of the thought of leading writers on Christology; b) an awareness of the controversies that underlie and gave rise to early modern Christological debate; c) an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of leading theories concerning the person and work of Christ; d) and be able to evaluate critically all of the above.
