Teaching 2009

For the autumn semester 2009, I taught the following courses in the Religions and Theology Subject Area at the University of Manchester. If you haven't already received your student login, then please click here to request it.

  • Introduction to the Study of Religions and Theology Core Course (RELT10311). This was a team taught autumn semester core course for the Religions and Theology BA degree programme. It explored key approaches to the study of religion such as anthropological, historical and phenomenological. This course was designed to be an introduction to all first year religions and theology degree students at the University of Manchester. It therefore fostered their transition into higher education by developing study and other transferable skills as a basis for later learning. For this year I convened the course, gave seven lectures and led one of its ten seminar groups.
  • The Return of Religion in the West (RELT31111 / RELT61111). This is an autumn semester third year BA course which is open to MA students as well.  Over eleven weeks it investigated the contemporary academic return to religion in terms of desecularization, religion and civil society, the end of metaphysics (post-ontological faith), and theological materialism.
  • Religion and Political Life Core Course (RELT60141). This was the autumn semester core course for the Religion and Political Life MA degree program. Here, we introduced students to a wide body of literature in religion and politics, such as Thomas Hobbes, Max Weber, Norberto Bobbio, Juergen Habermas and others.
